The often opulent charm of Minas Gerais' Baroque buildings and churches is bound to appeal to lovers of history and beauty in general. Charming Caeté has the advantage of being both steeped in history and located off the main gold route. As early as 1701, bandirantes attracted by gold deposits settled here and created a municipality. A pretty little town of 40,000 inhabitants, Caeté has all the charm of Minas Gerais, with its large baroque Matriz church dominating its narrow colonial streets. Few tourists venture here, and that's probably a shame. History seems to have come to a standstill here.
