Passagem de Mariana is a small community of around 3,500 inhabitants, located between Mariana and Ouro Preto. The main attraction of this village is the Passagem mines, the largest gold mines in the world, in operation from 1720 to 1990. A visit to the mines is one of the region's must-do activities. Just take one of the many buses between Ouro Preto and Mariana to reach the site. The size of these galleries is simply gigantic.
