Serra do Cipó National Park is considered one of Brazil's richest natural heritages. Its biodiversity and enormous potential for ecotourism, with its countless waterfalls, attract thousands of visitors. The Serra do Cipó is part of the Espinhaço massif, which divides the basin of the Rio Doce and Rio São Francisco, the river of "national unity". Over 33,000 hectares of exceptional flora and fauna (1,600 different plant species have been recorded here). The lucky ones will be able to see hundreds of species of animals, some of which are rare and endangered, such as the maned wolf(lobo guara). Located less than 2 hours from Belo Horizonte, it's a favorite destination for the city's inhabitants and attracts many Brazilian and South American tourists. The price of this success is that on weekends, the pousadas fill up fast. Mineiros are often city dwellers with a rural soul, and they love to return to these spaces of freedom.Like many places in the region, the Serra do Cipó was once a place of "garimpo", where gold and gemstone miners left behind interesting elements of collective memory, including the stone road built by slaves. There are also numerous rock paintings. Today, the Serra do Cipó offers a rich folklore, inherited from the original black and Portuguese population, where you can enjoy the joys of the mineiro art of living. Beware: during the rainy season, many tracks and paths are impassable.
