Close to Belo Horizonte, Sabará was the first major mining center in the state of Mineiro. Inthe early 18th century, it was undoubtedly one of the richest cities in the world. Its rich vestiges of sacred art, its churches, mansions and fountains recall those happy times. Sabarà is now a ghost town of the gold rush, perched in the mountains. It still boasts some beautiful churches, including Nossa Senhora do O, even if it has lost some of its colonial charm. However, its well-preserved monuments are well worth a visit. On the way to Ouro Preto, you'll have the chance to step back in time.
