87 km north of Guayaquil, inland. A priori, you will have no reason to pass or stay in Babahoyo. However, this town without history is typical of tropical Ecuador. Babahoyo is the capital of the province of Los Ríos, a province that is part of the Costa region although it has no outlet to the Pacific. The province was created on October 6, 1860 by President García Moreno after the victory of the troops commanded by General Flores, the first president of Ecuador, over the Peruvian troops. The city of Babahoyo was born on the lands of the hacienda that Flores owned here at the confluence of the San Pablo and Caracol rivers, forming the Babahoyo, named after the Babahuyu tribe that inhabited this region for centuries, as evidenced by the remains of the oldest cultures in the country. The city developed around trade, finding in the river a natural outlet towards Guayaquil. Babahoyo, surrounded by banana and cocoa plantations, retains little of its past grandeur. It has few tourist attractions, a perfect counterpart to Esmeraldas, but without the Africa. Babahoyo is however worth a visit: you can discover another aspect of the country. Here, it is hot and humid, life is teeming around the daily market that occupies the streets of the center. It is the tropical Ecuador with its wooden and bamboo houses and its huts on the river populating both banks. From the Malecón, you can take a boat ride up the river or go to the Olmedo house on the right bank.
