Scotland's fourth largest city owes its growth to its fishing port, particularly whaling, and the burlap trade. Jam and journalism have historically been other mainstays of the local economy, but Dundee has also developed thanks to its oil refineries, new technologies and its large student population. Its vitality in research, video games and comics has even earned it the distinction of being the UK's first UNESCO City of Design. Tourism has found its place in the city, building on the working-class and maritime past embodied by Verdant Works and Discovery Point, and with a new art museum.
