Kyleakin is the main access route to Skye, thanks to its bridge linking it to Kyle of Lochalsh. Completed in 1995, it rendered obsolete the pre-existing ferry link. Until 2004, a toll was charged for the crossing, but it was withdrawn following protests from the inhabitants. Now, it makes the island the only tourist destination in the Hebrides accessible by road and free of charge. Stop in this village for a bite to eat and to admire its small harbor where boats anchor in the shadow of the medieval ruins of Caisteal Maol (or Dunakin Castle). Stay further away to be in the heart of the island landscape.
