At the gateway to the Kintyre Peninsula, Tarbert sits on the small piece of land that keeps this area from being an island. It is an authentic and popular port village, full of charm, from which one can easily explore the surrounding area and which is linked to Cowal by a ferry. The ruins of its castle look out over the sea from the top of its hill and it is here that the Kintyre Way starts, a long distance hiking trail that leads to Machrihanish in the south. Its harbor is home to a still active fishing fleet, with an annual seafood festival in July. It is also close to four ferry terminals, linking notably the islands of Islay and Jura.
