The second largest fishing port in Galicia, it is the most important on the coast for tuna fishing, as can be seen in the Ethnographic Museum of Marine Culture, housed in an old tuna boat called the Reina del Carmen. The village of nearly 9,600 inhabitants also preserves its patron saint fiestas that are entirely sea-oriented, such as the Virgen del Carmen (Virgin of Mount Carmel) fiesta, which the villagers take to the streets at the beginning of June to bless the sailors on their way to sea to fish for the famous bonito del norte (northerly bonito). The Santa María church is well worth a visit for its paintings depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
