About 45 km west of Lugo, this municipality of almost 1,900 inhabitants preserves several pazos, the traditional Galician constructions. Former seigniorial residences, these rural manor houses have an architecture inherited from medieval castles. Surrounded by rivers and lagoons, the town offers a beautiful natural environment with forests of chestnut, oak and birch trees. Sobrado dos Monxes is also known for its 12th century Cistercian monastery, which is well worth a visit for its magnificent cloisters, Baroque church and other majestic rooms.
