This hamlet, 2 kilometers from Nishi-Akao, is an important stopover. The village of Suganuma and nine of its gassho-zukuri farms were classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, along with Ainokura and Ogimachi. Two areas make up the village: on one side Suganuma and on the other, Gokayama Gassho no Sato. They are connected by a tunnel. These beautiful mansions have now become restaurants, museums on daily life or minshuku. Gokayama Gassho no Sato could be considered as an open-air museum, no one lives in the farms in this area.
