Lake Ashi (Ashi-no-ko) owes its fortune to the proximity of Mount Fuji. The reflection of the mountain's slopes can be seen shimmering in its waters, giving it its mysterious beauty. When the weather permits, a fleet of pleasure boats, canoes and other craft invite you to sail around the lake, including the famous pirate boats popular with travelers. It is also a convenient way to reach the cable car. The sites presented in the following section are mostly located in Moto-Hakone, a small resort in the east of the lake, which played a historical role in the Edo period, and where there are now some museums and nice cafes.
