It is probably one of the most fashionable resorts in Japan and also the one that offers one of the rarest sights in the Japanese Alps. It owes its fame to Pastor Walter Weston who, in the late 19th century, helped make hiking in these "Alps" a sport. He also gave the region the name of Japanese Alps and aroused the curiosity of the local population for mountaineering and climbing. The famous pastor even has his passion honored on the first weekend of June, during the festival that opens the mountaineering season. The number of visitors in summer can be daunting, but once you get close to the first steep slopes, you'll enjoy the peace and quiet and the exceptional scenery. This is one of the must-see destinations for mountaineering enthusiasts in Japan. Please note! The resort is closed from November to the end of April.
