Matsumoto is famous for its superb castle, one of the few perfectly preserved in Japan. Over the years, it has also become a staging post for trekkers and hikers in the Japanese Alps. It has of course benefited from the impact of the Olympic Games in 1998, but it retains its provincial character and serves as an interesting stopover town between two mountain escapades.
