The capital of Hida province, Takayama has inherited the nickname Little Kyōto, with its old wooden houses, traditional inns, temples and shrines. The city, surrounded by mountains, has been preserved from the major urbanistic upheavals of the last forty years. Takayama is historically known for its handicrafts and is dedicated to the art of woodworking in the making of furniture. Takayama is also known for its many sake distilleries that can be visited. Takayama remains, for a good part of the tourists, an excellent stage for a journey of several days in the Japanese Alps. It is indeed from here that buses and trains leave for Hirayu Onsen, Kamikōchi or Norikura. You can also choose to walk around the city center. This walk is highly recommended, you will have the opportunity to visit about thirty temples and shrines in the mountain. The city is on a human scale, which facilitates strolling and a certain idea of tourism at your own pace.
