Small town located northwest of Nagano. It was the birthplace of Tokai Kōzan, an Edo period merchant who became the patron of the famous Japanese prints, the Ukiyo-e (woodcuts), made by the illustrious cartoonist Hokusai during the last ten years of his life. This small town has since become an important part of the history of Japanese art. Obuse is also known for its chestnut dishes and pastries and its kuri (chestnuts).
