Capital of the prefecture, Fukui played an important role during the Edo period (1603-1868) as the capital of Echizen province. Unfortunately, Fukui was destroyed by American bombing in 1945 during World War II and by an earthquake in 1948. Most of Fukui's historical and important sites are far from the center, but the city is an excellent starting point for visiting the northern part of the prefecture. The city is famous for fishing, including the famous Echizen crabs. Fukui will soon be connected to Tokyo with the extension of the Shinkansen Hokuriku line. This will facilitate access to the inhabitants of the capital, as well as to international travellers, eager to discover an endearing and little-known prefecture.
