The central position of Catanzaro has earned it the title of regional capital of Calabria. Its current appearance dates from the reconstruction of the city in the 19th century. Nothing, except for the small Norman church of Omobono, is truly ancient in Catanzaro. The earthquakes of 1783 and 1832 destroyed all its ancient monuments, which explains the multiplication of construction sites that shape its urban face, that of a regional capital. Overlooking the confluence of the Fiumarella and Musofalo, built on a plateau, Catanzaro offers a beautiful panorama: peaks, ridges, mountain ranges as far as the eye can see. The city itself is a tangle of alleys that go up and down.
