Lamezia Terme is a recent town from an administrative point of view, born in 1968 from the merger of the municipalities of Nicastro, Sambiase and Sant'Eufemia Lamezia. This agricultural and commercial center is also an important rail and road junction and is home to one of the main airports in Calabria. There are some historical treasures, or at least what remained standing after the devastating earthquake of March 27, 1638, such as the ruins of the Norman-Swabian castle that stands atop Nicastro. In Sant'Eufemia, excavations have identified the ancient site of Terina, founded by Crotone in the5th century BC (not open to the public).
