Vibo Valentia, since the time of the Roman Empire, has always been a centre of strategic importance on the Tyrrhenian coast. Almost completely razed to the ground by the Saracens, it owes its current appearance to the reconstruction carried out under Frederick II. In 1783, an earthquake shook the entire region and destroyed a large part of the city. Vibo was rebuilt again, without economizing on the number of palaces and churches, rich witnesses of the commercial prosperity of the city. To this day, the city has maintained its perfect size, modest enough to be human, and large enough to be lively and animated. An endearing stop on this part of the coast. Nearby, Vibo Marina is a pleasant little summer resort.
