Founded in 1993, on about 182 180 ha, it has 172 583 inhabitants divided between Basilicata and Calabria. The National National park is a vast area of the Apennines dominated by the Pollino Massif (2 248 m). The lucanienne part, which marks the southern boundary, consisting of large forests, green pastures and arable areas, includes the Sinni basin and its tributaries. This mountain massif is the result of a compression caused by the African continent, compression that caused it to emerge 1 000 m from the ocean abyss, about 60 million years ago; 2 million years ago, it was still 1 200 m long, and the Pollino massif is made up of powerful dolomitiques limestones from land that arose millions of years ago. A vast protected area with magnificent landscapes, the Pollino is also an extraordinary reserve of fauna and flora, some species such as orchids are not uncommon elsewhere in Europe. It's also the territory of the royal eagle, the vulture, the gypaète, the great duke and the boar… And, with some luck, you can meet the wolf, of which there are only about thirty specimens. Water streams are abundant in trout, otters and eyeglasses.
