An ancient agricultural village founded in the 15th century, it later became the stronghold of the San Severino family. It is one of the most important places to visit in the Park of the Pollino. Its main church houses a statue of the Virgin of Pollino, venerated by the locals. According to tradition, it was discovered in a cave some fifteen kilometres away, in the hamlet of Mezzana, where a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna del Pollino has since been erected. Located on the northern slope of the Pollino massif, at an altitude of 1,537 m, it is visited by many pilgrims from Calabria and Basilicata. Every first Sunday of the month there is a feast in honour of the Virgin
