115 000 inhabitants. Located on the right bank of Uzh, Uzhgorod is the largest city in Transcarpatie and is an excellent introduction to the region. Founded in the th century by the Slavic prince Laboretz, who built the castle of Uzhgorod where he spent his life and where one of the first museums of Ukraine was installed. Old chronicles in Hungary tell that the city was taken by the Hungars in 872. The Hungars are a tribe coming from Central Asia which will train Hungarians on the Danube Plains. The old name of the city, Ongvar, reflects the city's Magyar past. Today Uzhgorod is a border town with strong Romanian and Hungarian minorities. A 40 min walk from the main square via Sobranetska Street will take you directly to the border with Slovakia. It is therefore a city full of life, shops and hope, which also charm its architecture and its spirit which makes it very much resemble a city in the Balkans.
