Visp, or Viège in German, is a fairly modern village 20 km from the Italian border, on the line of the famous Paris-Milan railway. The Vispa river gave the valley its name. Modern, yet rich in history: excavations have uncovered prehistoric tombs and Gallo-Roman remains. An earthquake destroyed the town in 1855, which explains its contemporary reconstruction. What remains, however, is a fairly well-preserved historic center. See the pre-1000 parish. The old town has charming streets with small squares where you can enjoy a glass of fendant.
