The Val Poschiavo is an isolated mountain valley that provides access to the Engadine from Italy's Valtellina region (Lake Como, Adda Valley). The Poschiavo, the torrent that drains the valley, is some 30 km long and flows south from Lake Blanc (2,300 m) at the Bernina Pass to its confluence with the Adda at Tirano, close to the Italian border (429 m). The landscape is both beautiful and unusual: there is no other region in Switzerland where the transition from sub-Mediterranean to Alpine and snow vegetation is so marked. Poschiavo is the capital of this unspoilt Valposchiavo world. Its imposing patrician houses surround a Piazza reminiscent of Italy.
