The Engadine is the Inn Valley, a beautiful tributary of the Danube flowing to Austria. By extension, this valley includes the vaux, Val Bregalia, Val Julier, Val Bernina, Val Sybilline, Val Albula and Val Muster. In a natural setting of great beauty, the villages of these valleys have preserved a typical architecture and their inhabitants a genuine rural culture, exemplified by the use of Romansh dialect. The upper part of the Inn Valley, the Upper Engadine, made famous by the notoriety of St. Moritz's crested station, extends from the Col Pass to Zernez. For 20 000 kilometres in length, the 1 700 inhabitants of the main valley live at an average altitude of m. Such an altitude at this altitude is unique in Europe. It is a large valley and open, flat, with lakes, huge mountain ranges and a particularly bright sky. Landscapes inspired by great artists, painters or writers of the th and th centuries. The Upper Engadine, which saw the first winter sports (with English in St. Moritz since 1859), is now a high place for sport and family tourism. Summer as winter, paths lead to glaciers foot and are easily accessible. In winter there are children on sledges, packed in doudounes and with sunglasses, adults with wonderful skiing areas or hiking on the 350 km of slopes in the region. The perfect connections between the train and cable networks make it easy to access these routes. There are still clear moon rides and ski safaris, the Muottas Muragl luge trail with its 700 m divergence, a profusion of ice rinks and indoor swimming pools. Where the valley hosts many prestigious events and this long time: the 1928 and 1948 Olympic Winter Games and the organisation of the World Championships in St. Moritz-Pontresina in 2003.The Lower Engadine covers the Inn Valley from Zernez to the Austrian border. Although less populated and less known, it offers numerous hiking opportunities, especially in the Swiss National Park and the Val Münster at the gates of Austrian Tyrol and Italian Adige.
