Built on a hill between two tributaries of the Soulles river, Coutances occupies, at a dozen kilometers from the sea, a position which makes it remarkable from afar. Interesting, the city is also interesting by its site and its architectural legacy. Seat of the bishopric, Coutances was until the Revolution, the capital of the great bailiwick of Cotentin. It is to this double function that it owes the importance and the quality of its heritage. It is impossible to evoke Coutances without mentioning its superb cathedral and its internationally renowned Jazz under the Apple Trees festival, which turns the wise city into a sparkling city during the event.
