Originally a small resort for gold seekers in medieval times, this charming little town is now one of the largest ski resorts in Poland. Since the 17th century, Karpacz has been a renowned training center for Protestant priests and a popular base for laboratories collecting medicinal herbs. Since the 19th century it has been a tourist destination. Karpacz is situated at 500-880 m above sea level. The town is dominated by the highest mountain in the region at 1,602 m (Snieżka). Several ski lifts provide access to a dozen ski slopes.
