This large city of 100,000 inhabitants rightly competes with its neighbour Hradec Králové, with which it is connected by numerous buses and trains. Founded in 1340 (100 years after its rival), it was ravaged in the 16th century by three gigantic fires. Fortunately rebuilt, it still has beautiful streets lined with Renaissance houses. The Czechs know it for its rich architecture, horse racing, gingerbread, and the famous Semtex explosive made in the nearby suburb of Semtim.
