The town of Kutná Hora (24,000 inhabitants) is a small Prague, rich and poor at the same time, whose glory days date back a few centuries. The discovery of silver and copper veins in the hills of Kutná Hora in the 13th century was the reason for the rapid development and fame of the town. Throughout the Middle Ages, the city lived at the rhythm of mining. The very name of the town bears witness to this as kutná hora literally means "mountain of the mine". The wealth from the exploitation of money has benefited the architecture of the whole city. Around 1550 the twilight arrived; the exhaustion of the main deposits quickly plunged the city into oblivion. Kutná Hora has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
