A good starting point for hikes in the Sudetenland, this pretty town is quiet, with a pedestrian center. Its setting, surrounded by mountains, highlights its beautiful arcaded Rynek and its narrow streets. Jelenia Góra (Hirschberg) was one of the European centers of linen manufacturing. Popular with the Prussian aristocracy, who were converted to mountain sports, it has kept its elegant architecture from the 19th century. The industrialization of the communist era extended beyond the center, without altering it. It is a good base for trips to the Giant Mountains and has many sports stores. A spa town 8km away: Cieplice.
