Niquinohomo is the birthplace of Augusto Sandino. A bronze statue of him has greeted you at the entrance since 2001. There's also a beautiful colonial church dating from 1689, the oldest still standing in Nicaragua. The municipal library occupies Sandino's paternal childhood home, with a small exhibition of photos and related objects. On weekdays, it's also an opportunity to meet young students.Regular buses from Managua, at the Mercado Roberto Huembes terminal. From Masaya, take a bus to Jinotepe from the municipal market. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Niquinohomo entrance.
