The beaches of Santo Domingo and Santa Cruz are a favorite with travelers. They are located on the rather narrow strip of land connecting the two pieces of the island (the two volcanoes). Winds can be fierce here, but the view of the Maderas volcano (and even of the Concepción cone if you swim away from the shore) and its location in front of the infinity of Lake Nicaragua (small waves, warm water) invite you to rest and meditate. However, there are no villages or stores in the vicinity (so be warned). What's more, the lake water rises during the rainy season, significantly reducing the beach area.
