This magnificent lagoon was formed by a volcanic eruption around 21,000 years ago. Its maximum depth is estimated at over 400 m, and it measures 6 km in diameter. The waters are warm and slightly salty, and the moonrises anthological! The lagoon can be reached by tarmac road between Masaya and Catarina or between Masaya and Granada (2 options).An interesting fauna populates the vegetation covering the flanks of the flared crater, including howler and white-headed monkeys. At least 145 bird species have been recorded here. The basalt used by the natives to build their grandiose statues comes from this crater.
