From the top of its 1 745 metres, San Cristóbal is the largest active volcano in Nicaragua. Several other volcanoes surround it (El Casita, El Choncho, Moyotepe, and La Pelona), but we usually talk about the San Cristóbal volcanic complex, including all under the same name. Gas constantly comes out of the volcano; there are also regular earthquakes in the area. Climbing San Cristóbal is one of the most difficult ascents in Nicaragua. Independent agencies and guides offer the excursion, but you have to be in very good physical shape (and often the volcano access is closed because of too intense activity).
