Beautiful and quiet island, alanguie, where the traveller can take up forces and share good moments with a particularly friendly population.Beaches are not paradise, but let us contemplate, and the somewhat surreal atmosphere of the old port of the world acts like a balm. Moreover, prices are rather nice.Attention: on holidays, some weekends or during the Holy Week (horror!), the island is squattée by the residents of Tegucigalpa. It is better to come to another moment. The island owes its name to the tigres (pumas) that once rôdaient it.The only city on the island, Amapala, has had a prestigious history: Pirate refuge in the time of Discoveries, it was once the seat of the national government, and then one of the most important ports in the Pacific (superseded by Puerto de Henecán near San Lorenzo). Today, the splendour of the th century houses is still evident on their délavées facades and overhauling balconies.Chismuyo Bay, located between Amapala, Alianza and Nacaome, is a 317 km ² Brazilian life refuge and is home to mangroves with a height of 25 m. Shrimp farmers and livestock lovers, however, endanger this fragile and fascinating ecosystem, and a substantial portion of the reserve has already been damaged. Finally, the waters of the Gulf of Fonseca are shared between three neighbouring nations: El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.
