Founded in 1857 by King Mindon and last capital of the Burmese kingdoms, religious capital, Mandalay was also a cultural capital. People came here from all over Burma looking for pwe actors, reputed to be the most gifted in the country. The education provided in the numerous monasteries of the city developed among young people a receptivity to the jataka theatre. In the same way, the city still today has the best puppet masters. Mandalay radiates throughout Burma by the fame of its artists and craftsmen. But it can also be considered as the new economic capital of the country, driven by the important and powerful Chinese community, which came by the road that connects Burma to Yunnan. This is evidenced by the large multi-storey houses in the residential area, built in the Chinese style. A cosmopolitan city, with dense traffic, oscillating between authenticity and modernity.
