After the fall of Bagan, Sagaing was founded in 1315 by Athinkhaya Sawyun. The son of the youngest of the three brothers shan. It remained the capital of an independent Shan kingdom until 1365, when Thadominbya abandoned it in favour of Ava. But Sagaing again became the royal capital by the will of Alaungpaya's eldest son Naungdawgyi from 1760 to 1764. After the latter's death, she left the role of royal seat to Ava a second time. Little noticed in the history of Burma, Sagaing is noticed today for its religious wealth. It is indeed one of the high places of Buddhism, as shown by its many monasteries and convents. From a touristic point of view, Sagaing is compared to a small Bagan, for the multitude of pagodas perched on its hillsides. It is good to stroll there. A small and quiet Burmese town, it reminds us of the serene atmosphere of some old colonial towns in lower Burma
