Tourism is in its infancy in Kyaukme. The city is not beautiful and you have to go a little bit far from it to discover the charm of its region, mainly inhabited by Lisu, Palaung, Shan and Chinese. The villagers live to the rhythm of the corn, pineapple and rice harvests. The city has about 50 000 inhabitants, including 20 000 Chinese, because of the road to China that passes through there. Nearly 300 villages depend on the town. It seems that the city works on behalf of China: bamboo paper factory for China, vegetables and fruits for China, silver leaf for Chinese funerals, etc.. It is good to walk around the area. It's better to hire a guide, and check that the region is accessible, so as to understand everything that is happening in a region undergoing rapid change, and not to get lost in the mountains where there are no official maps
