Houay Xay is a town that stretches along the Mekong River. Its prosperity is linked to trade with Yunnan Province, China, as well as regular exchanges with Chiang Khong on the Thai side of the Mekong River just across the river. Many tourists enter Laos by crossing the river from Thailand. Houay Xay is usually a short stopover before reaching Luang Prabang, two days by boat, or Luang Namtha, 5 hours drive further north. And yet, it is a peaceful place to rest. Lao Deung, Hmong and Yao minorities are established in the city. The morning market, often lively, is worth a visit.
