This small town is located in the far north of Thailand, on the southern bank of the Nam Sai. Together with the town of Takhileik, on the other side of the Sai River, it forms a border post with Shan State in Myanmar. A bridge allows passage between the two countries. It stretches along the banks of the Sai River and along Phahonyothin Street (the main north-south axis). It boasts an interesting market, shops and low-cost overnight hotels. In times of political détente, many Burmese cross the border to shop or work in Thailand. Mae Sai therefore has a pronounced Burmese atmosphere.
