This peaceful town, located west of Luang Prabang and southeast of Pakbeng, has a population of 6,000. It is usually reached from Sayaboury, the capital of the eponymous province. The road leading to it has been improved and makes traffic flow more smoothly. In 2016, the arrival of the Hongsa Power project, a large power plant, helped to modernize and expand the village. The town is located on a small plateau in the middle of the hills and is very quiet in normal times. The town is a good starting point for many treks leading to ancient stupas, waterfalls and ethnic villages.
