Although peaceful, this provincial town of about 18,000 inhabitants seems unattractive at first glance. Its foundation on the banks of the Nam Hung River is said to date back to 1450 CE. Also called Xayaboury, it is a relatively important flourishing economic center, as evidenced by the construction of real estate. It is mainly a base for exploring the rest of the province. The city celebrates the Elephant Festival every year in mid-February. The festival commemorates the nation's living icon. The two-day celebration, filled with elephant-related activities and performances, kicks off with an elephant procession and the blessing of monks.
