The world's most famous carol, Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht , was first heard in public in 1818 on Christmas Eve in the parish church of Oberndorf. The church has now disappeared, but a lovely little memorial chapel has been built in honour of this now world-famous melody. Right next door you can visit the Stille Nacht Museum (Stille Nacht-Platz 2), which is dedicated to folk art and traditions and to this sacred song, composed by the organist and village teacher Hans Xaver Gruber (1787-1863) and its history.
