Between Linz and the Czech border, Freistadt is a city with a medieval centre and good tourist facilities. It is a popular place to visit. It is situated in the middle of the Romantic Road (Romantikstrasse) between Vienna and Salzburg and is worth a day trip. The particularly well-preserved fortifications, the charming alleys, squares and courtyards make for a pleasant walk. Freistadt is an example of perfectly preserved medieval architecture. On the way, it is worthwhile to stop at Kefermarkt to see the famous Gothic carved altarpiece in the village church.
