The "wide fjord", Breiðafjörður, has 2,000 to 3,000 islands and islets that provide refuges for seabirds and grey seals. Flatey, a flat island of only 0.5 km², is the only one inhabited all year round (only 5 inhabitants). It is a magnificent place to get away from it all and recharge your batteries in the middle of nature. Its small fishermen's village with its colourful wooden houses is lively in the summer, but remains quiet out of season... You won't find any shops there. The island has been the location of several films and series, such as The Enigma of Flatey, a mini-series that was broadcast on French television in August 2021. From May 15 to July 15, the eastern tip of the island is off-limits due to eider nesting. "Flatey" incidentally means "flat island".
