The heart of the Western Fjords is torn by the Ísafjarðardjúp, an 80 km long spit of sea whose southern coast is cut into many small fjords. The westernmost is Skutulsfjörður, dominated by steep peaks. This majestic setting is home to the town of Ísafjörður, a small regional capital, which lies on a sandy peninsula.Ísafjörður, with a population of 3,000, is the main town in the Western Fjords and the economic, cultural and administrative centre of the northwestern peninsula. The town is mainly dependent on fishing, supplemented by the development of high-tech facilities and, of course, the ever-growing tourism.
