1 km west of Spišské Podhradie, Spišska Kapitula is served by the bus that stops in Spišské Podhradie and connects Levoča to Prešov. From the 12th century, this small town was the religious centre of the Spiš region, built next to a Benedictine monastery from the 11th century. A cathedral was built there at the beginning of the 13th century. The whole is progressively fortified to face repeated warlike assaults. The Jesuits settled in Spišska Kapitula from the 17th century and built a monastery and a grammar school. The city, which was only a provostry, succeeded in becoming a bishopric in 1776. It still retains that status today.
