Among the fortified Lombard cities, the one of Soncino, flanked by corner towers and surrounded by a moat, seems to come out of a chivalrous novel. A border town between the possessions of the Sforza of Milan and those of the Republic of Venice, Soncino passed several times through the hands of both. The original structure of the fortress was built in the 12th century by Venice, and was subsequently modified in the 15th century. It is now an important exhibition centre. The picturesque medieval village is one of the best preserved in Italy and is well worth a walk, and its many churches contain many fine works of art
