Beroun, a small town of less than 20,000 inhabitants, is located at the confluence of the Litavka and Berounka rivers. It is a pleasant starting point to many sites that will delight those who want to get off the beaten track. The town developed on the site where the trading village of Brod ("ford" in Czech) stood as early as 1088. It was an important crossing point between Prague and Bavaria. The town itself was founded in 1265, during the reign of King Přemysl Otokar II. In the 19th century, the town found itself on the route of the railroad connecting Prague to Pilsen and developed its economy around the emerging industrial activity
